"Rural Simplicity"...
For some, these are the basic elements you'll find in most rural areas: a barn, fence, tree, pond and grasses. I started with my original photograph and wanted to do something more creative with the results, so I converted it into a pencil drawing digitally. The simplicity and contrast suggest snow on the ground on a bright, cloudy day.
Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

"Barn Finds"...
Last year while visiting my parents, we drove the backroads to this local restaurant. En route, I saw a barn that had a few older cars in it. I mentioned to them, let's figure-out who owns this and see if I can photograph what's in there! This past weekend, we did just that. Interesting barn with several classics from the 70's and 80's: Porsche 924, Alfa Romeo, Datsun 280ZX, Jaguar XJ12, and an old Ford tractor. Here's a teaser of the Alfa.
I'll post more photos as I get time to edit them.
Location: Barn, private land, 'somewhere' in remote, southwest Arkansas. :)

"Tufted Flight"...
The Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) in flight. This is a songbird that has a wingspan around 10 inches but only weighs about 1 ounce. This species’ dependence on dead wood for their homes is one reason why it’s important to allow dead trees to remain in forests rather than cutting them down.

"The Chase Is On"...
It's a challenge to get good quality in-flight butterfly photos of a single butterfly, but to photograph two butterflies chasing each other is more rare. Patience, observation and experience with photographing butterflies helped me. A low angle produced an environmental portrait of these two deep in their environment.

Giving Pause...
We all have our own reasons for taking a moment to pause. Whereever we are. Whatever we're doing. Whether it's to respect the past, the place or the time. I'll leave your interpretation of why this Coyote paused for a moment and lowered it's head at dusk. A special moment.

Wader of Quiet Waters...
The Great Egret (also known as Great White Egret or Common Egret), Ardea alba, has an average wingspan around 5 feet. They nest in trees, near water and gather in groups called colonies. The great egret is the symbol of the National Audubon Society and represents a conservation success story.

"Food-Sharing"...
A male Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) passes food to a youngster. The plumage color of the males is produced from carotenoid pigments in the diet. Young birds, both male and female, show coloring similar to the adult female until the fall, when they molt and grow adult feathers.

"Shielding Lunch"...
This was one of those times where patience and observation eventually paid off. This is an interesting photograph for several reasons. I watched this Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) for hours, but to my surprise, I witnessed this hawk swoop down to the surface of the lake and catch a fish on the wing. You can see the fish between its talons. You'll also notice an approaching crow. The crows are an intelligent species and highly observant -- enough to know that the hawk had caught a fish. As soon as the hawk returned to the perch to eat the catch, the first priority is to shield the catch from any other predators who might try to steal the meal. As you can tell, this hawk is trying to shield the view of the fish by extending its left wing. The hawk was able to get a few bites before the harrassing crow eventually forced the hawk to drop its catch back into the lake, neither getting their fill of fish.

I really like the mood of this night scene. The coca-cola nostalgia offers a friendly, cozy, inviting flavor to this local shop, while the nights' street scene adds just the right mood.

At first, the simplicity may draw you to this photograph. As you study it, you may appreciate the texture and size of the rock structures or how nature surrounds it with trees each pointing to their own path and future.

Paul V. loves working with his hands. He makes a variety of instruments including guitars, fiddles, banjos and more. He's always working on "projects". I asked if he could play something and he replied, "Well, okay but I'm not as good as I used to be."
This is from a series of portraits I took of him. Comments welcome.

"Upper Atmosphere"...
Atmosphere is defined as a particular environment or surrounding influence. This upper atmosphere view above a valley in the wilderness of Arkansas is not as it may seem. This is actually a detail view of water flowing in a stream over a mossy bed of rock. What we creatively see as clouds in this environment, in essence are aquatic clouds for the microorganisms that live amidst this green, mossy forest floor. There is more to life than what appears on the surface.
