Point to Ponder...

What's better that you could do successfully, and then how much more or less fun is that, how much more or less does it pay, and how much more or less future is there to it?

Hummingbird Clearwing Moth

I took a few minutes today to photograph one of my daily visitors to my backyard. I haven't yet confirmed if this is the Hummingbird Clearwing Moth or the Snowberry Hummingbird Clearwing Moth. Nonetheless, it's a beautiful creature to watch. It's extremely difficult to photograph since they are so small (about 2 inches tall - which is typical of the Snowberry species), but it's also very fast. It moves and hovers similar to a hummingbird but at a more nervous pace. It's wingbeat is about 30 beats per second, which is impressive for a moth. The ones I photographed last year were about 1-2 inches larger (considerably larger).

Keep in mind, I'm manually focusing my lens to capture these...Here are just a few from today. To give you a sense of size, the flowers you see are about the size of a thumbtack.

How to wake up early?

The seasons change (at least here in the U.S.) and when the days become shorter and colder, it becomes more tempting to stay in the warmth of your bed covers. What to do? Check out the website How to wake up early. Lots of tips and ideas on the topic of sleeping and waking from your dreams. Enjoy!

It was a tough choice, but this is my choice for August Image of the Month. I took this image of an immature Blue Bird near my home.

Image of the Month - July

I'm a little behind on choosing my favorite image from July. I chose an action photograph of an Eastern Red-tailed Hawk hunting squirrels near my home. This is an impressive raptor to watch in action.

Since today is my birthday, I have to do something creative! :)
I've created a new t-shirt design to add to my collection. This is an image of an old pair of hiking boots with my slogan "Hiking is life." Take a look and buy one for yourself or a hiking friend!

Dann Dunn - performance artist

If you haven't seen these yet, you need to see this guy work. You have to be patient - don't fast-forward the video - try to figure-out what he's painting, and realize how fast he's doing it!
Note: If you're at work, put on your headphones.

Both are good to watch:

Macro images from last week

Here are a few macro images from last week. Each of these has their own artistic flavor. Notice the lines in these photographs - how they add to the depth of the image. The Praying Mantis is almost humorously posed! (ha)

Small gifts can change lives

Occasionally, I come across stories which really inspire us to become the kind and generous people we should be. This such story is certainly one of these. This is a great story of how Annette Biggers' seemingly small gift changed someone's life.
A must read!

Sunday evening shoot

I went out Sunday evening to capture some images at a nearby lake. Here are a few from that trip...
Black-and-white panorama of a nearby lake.

This immature bluejay was very patient while I photographed it for a few minutes.

Software blog added

I've decided to separate my blogs by photography (this blog) and software. I've decided to move all my tech/software info to my KellySoftware blog. Feel free to visit my new software blog and sign-up for the newsletter there too. This will allow me to keep this blog related only to photography-related topics. Enjoy!

May - Image of the Month

This is one of my favorite images from May. It's a very small butterfly - an Eastern Tailed-Blue (Cupido comyntas). It has a total wingspan of about 3/4 of an inch. It's perched on a blade of grass. After photographing it for more than 20 minutes, I was able to build enough trust for it to let me touch it a few times.

In the Press - IconHider

My IconHider program continually gets in the press, so I’ve decided to start collecting the clippings. The latest is the April 2007 issue of PC-WELT magazine. It’s a German PC magazine published by IDG Media. I’ve scanned the respective pages and have them on my IconHider program page. Feel free to check it out - it’s a neat desktop program and it’s FREE.
